Every part of who you are – Discovering your top three inner voices

Who am I?

Throughout history, certain existential questions have haunted humanity, and this one – the, “Who am I?” – question, is considered by many to be one of the biggest and most important existential questions of all time. Are we flesh, blood, and bones held together by gravity having chemical reactions? Or are we something more?

We are all made up of a beautiful tapestry of thoughts, emotions, experiences, urges, and quirks. While there are no “bad” parts, there may be various parts of who you are that are not in alignment with your highest and most authentic self. Until your authentic truth courageously takes back conscious control of your life, some aspects of who you are may be operating unconsciously.

Getting to know the ‘parts’ of who you are

As a licensed Holistic Therapist and Transformation Coach, I firmly believe that getting to know the parts of who you are is one of the most powerful and liberating ways to cultivate self-love. The life-changing process of “getting to know yourself” requires radical self-compassion, and to this end, I have found it is very helpful to organize the parts of who you are into categories.

The Adult Chair® model is a coaching method that breaks down what it means to be human and to own and accept ALL the parts of who you are. There might be some parts of you that may take some time to understand, but again, there are no “bad” parts. There are only misunderstood or unexplored parts longing for you to get to know them. The Adult Chair® model helps you understand the three main parts that make up all of us:

  1. The Child

  2. The Adolescent

  3. The Adult

These three “Chairs” represent each voice within you. It is from these perspectives, formed during the different phases of life, that we navigate life's challenges, our experiences, and our relationships.

These three core parts of you are provide answers to why you do the things you do.

Why do I do the things I do?

Whenever a choice needs to be made, every part of who you are automatically collaborates together to formulate a response – a response delivered by either the Child, the Adolescent, or the Adult version of you. To figure out the why behind an action, look within and determine which voice spoke – the Child, the Adolescent, or the Adult. Understanding which chair you are operating from at any given moment provides greater self-awareness behind why you do the things you do.

The Adult is the wisest and highest version of yourself. The Adult is the only part of you who has access to adult-level, decision making wisdom, and when the Adult You is in charge and acting with conscious responsibility, every other part falls into its proper place. The child is protected and celebrated. The Adolescent is soothed and understood. The Adult – the adult you always needed and wanted – is in control. All is well.

Re-programming your mind & re-building your life through The Adult Chair®

When you sit in and speak from your Adult Chair, you are speaking directly from your intuition – your inner voice of truth. This inner voice of wisdom represents the truest part of who you are, and when you lose contact with this most central part of yourself, it becomes very easy to fall back into unconscious programming and experience life by default instead of by design.

The Adult voice is your advocate and guide towards your truest identity, and when the Adult You takes charge, all the other parts of you operate from their appropriate place. Once inner alignment is restored, a sacred space opens, and in that space, there is room for healing and growth to flourish.

The authentic you

I will often use the Adult Chair® model to help my clients achieve inner alignment by working with them to organize the parts of who they are. “Who am I?” and “Why do I do the things I do?” are great questions to ask. But we also explore other questions like, “Who was I before the world told me who I needed to be?” and “Who did I have to become in order to be loved and accepted?”

These are Adult questions, and the Adult You knows the answers. The Adult You has a voice. What do you want to say? I’m listening…
